Raised near Seattle in the US, Julia has always gravitated toward the written word and pursued stories by way of conversation. She spent the last year on a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship exploring grassroots media and reporting across Nepal, India, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Ecuador, after studying history as an undergraduate at Scripps College.
